'Going Places I've Never Been Before' by Mark Chatterly
The Grey Rabbit Gallery & Lounge is honored to host the first Grand Rapids solo exhibition of the work of internationally renowned sculptor and painter Mark Chatterly.
Hailing from Williamston, MI, Mark has been practising his craft for more than three decades. His sculptures have received numerous honors including The People's Choice Award at ArtPrize in Grand Rapids in 2021, and his influence can be felt in the work of artists across the US and internationally.
The Grey Rabbit show, entitled 'Going Places I Have Never Been Before', includes several totally distinctive sculptural works as well as a dozen paintings created during Mark's regular residencies in Arizona. As long-time devotees of his works, we have a selection of his sculptures permanently installed in our outdoors area, and are beyond thrilled to invite you to experience his unique, haunting aesthetic while enjoying selections from our menus of cocktails, wine, beers and light bites.
"Everything is either moving toward or away from nothingness. Life, death, creation and destruction: this is the world I find myself in, and I want my art to echo it. Everything in a state of flux, changing and reform. A sense of decay living next to life. Nothing permanent, nothing staying the same. I also try to show the thoughts and feelings of our human condition. Beauty in the malformed, acceptance of the inevitable. I am doing work of our time for our time, even while I look to the past, the dead, for inspiration." – Mark Chatterly
From Dallas With Flower In Hand
Bryan Long from Grey Gardens floral artistry in Dallas will be arranging elegant floral designs at The Grey Rabbit. Installing on April 15th, with the artist reception on the 16th, we’re excited for Bryan’s spring transformation of our space.
Five ceramic artists will be providing vases for Bryan — Michael Burmeister (Fennville), Thomas Krakowski (Douglas), Catherine Green (Douglas), Marjolein Moser (Spring Lake), and Mike Taylor (Hamilton).
Growing up in Michigan, Bryan spent most of his childhood alongside his grandmother, Helen, and mother, Patricia, tending to their exquisite gardens filled with fresh peonies and lush hydrangeas. A weekly trip to city market with his grandmother would allow him the opportunity to select flowers and arrange them together at home. Several years later, after spending time in the corporate world, Bryan decided to stop fighting his passion and follow his nose to the world of floral design. The rest is beautiful history.
