GRAPHIC at The Grey Rabbit

Welcome to GRAPHIC at The Grey Rabbit!

Curated by Michael Burmeister of the Button Gallery in Douglas, GRAPHIC features five artists whose work showcases bold lines, flat shapes, high contrast colors, minimal shading, and hypnotic pattern and repetition.

The acrylic paintings of Andrea Tama and Randall Mattheis exhibit a shared and deep connection to the landscape. They communicate it in very distinct styles, however, Tama seeking out patterns and rhythms while Mattheis’ works tend to elicit more visceral responses.

Pattern, color and repetition are dynamic themes for both Mark Ottens and Krista Reuter. Ottens primarily produces acrylic on panel paintings that make forceful use of shape and color, while Reuter takes paper itself as her muse, using its visual and tactile qualities to striking effect.

Notably, the exhibition also includes eight original lithographs by Dutch painter, sculptor and poet Karel Appel, a founding member of the CoBrA movement whose work has been exhibited worldwide and can be found in multiple museum collections including the Museum of Modern Art, the Stedelijk Museum, and the Guggenheim. Created at the Mourlot Studios in Paris in 1974, the bright, expressionistic lithos included in GRAPHIC are inspired by folk and children’s art.
